  • Collected Papers. Vol. 5 - Mathematics and Religion

    by C. K. Raju

The religious beliefs related to mathematics were in agreement with early Christianity, but differed sharply from post-Nicene Christianity and were consequently banished by Justinian. This (“Neoplatonic” ) philosophy deeply influenced early Islamic rational theology and was adopted, post-Crusade, as Christian rational theology. The claim that mathematical theorems are universal truths now sought to impose a particular religious metaphysics on all others. The book points out that the metaphysics underlying present-day mathematics is certainly not universal, and that a different logic is used by Buddhist and Jains. Consequently, the nature of logic should be decided empirically, taking into account also quantum mechanics, and that makes deduction fallible.
